History |
| It was in
1909 while Miss Anna Caroline Benning of Columbus was in Moultrie as the
guest of Mrs. R. L. Shipp (Emily Kline) that Mrs. W. C. Vereen (Ellen
McNeill) called a number of congenial ladies, who were eligible to
become members of DAR together at her home. With Miss Benning's able and
gracious assistance, they organized the Moultrie John Benning Chapter
DAR, so named in honor of Miss Benning's Revolutionary ancestor, Jean
Antoin (John) Benning. The Chapter was officially organized on November
1, 1910, with Mrs. W. C. Vereen as Organizing Regent. Miss Anna Caroline Benning, daughter of General Henry L. Benning, was institutional in organizing the Oglethorpe Chapter in Columbus, Georgia on December 12, 1892. The Oglethorpe Chapter was the sixth chapter organized in Georgia. The artwork below depicts Miss Anna Caroline Benning. It was painted by Mr. Frank S. Herring and is in the collection of the Columbus Museum, Columbus, Georgia. The United Daughters of the Confederacy gifted it to the museum. . |
